About Me

Hey! I'm Kate. I'm 23 from Liverpool, via a little town called Leyland.

Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts

I've been singing for as long as I can remember, and now I'm lucky enough to do it professionally alongside my career as a theatre and entertainment manager. I started my training at UCLAN, but, to be honest, it was rubbish, so I upped my game and got into the The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney. It's one of the toughest performing arts institutions to get into that there is. Result!

Acoustic Singer for weddings, restaurants and pub gigs

Throughout my degree I gigged regularly as an acoustic singer: lots of lovely weddings, classy corporate do's, restaurant residencies, and pub gigs too. I was a member of a folky girl band for a while, as well as singing with soul band 110thStreet, and have performed in musical theatre for around 10 years... since I was in high school in fact.

Acoustic singer in Spain

Most of my acoustic gigs are in the North West - Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire etc - but I'm available as an acoustic singer throughout the UK and parts of Europe. I especially love getting out to Spain, believe it or not! The Costas and islands are my favourite place to sing!

Things I Like

When I'm not singing, I like baking, theatre (especially musicals), Disney, bright colours, laughing a lot (there's an embarrassing 3 minute long laughing fit video somewhere on the net to prove it!), chocolate, posh nosh and Disaronno with cranberry juice. Jensen Ackles makes the list too.

Enjoy the site, and please keep in touch via the social media links at the top of the page!

Acoustics By Kate

Lounge Music Duo

I set up Acoustics By Kate after working in a lounge music duo 2Close Acoustic Duo for a few years and following conversations with fellow musicians, customers and venues, who all thought I should look into a less formal act to contrast the duo (and probably to match my personality too!).

Classic and Modern Live Lounge Chart Hits

I'm available accompanied on piano by my hugely talented (and gorgeous boyfriend) session-musician Craig Smith, and on guitar too; it wouldn't be 'acoustics' with backing tracks after all! There's the option of an additional percussionist too, and, if you really want one, a full band. I perform loads of top chart hits both modern and classic delivered in a chilled out, fun manner. Think super-cool unique versions of great tracks like Radio 1 Live Lounge, just without Ferne Cotton. Oh, and no radio... otherwise you wouldn't need me!

Have a look at the 'Songs I Sing' page for my repertoire. The 'My Samples' page will show you how I sing them. I'll try to keep them both up to date, but no promises...

Testimonials & Feedback

A bit embarrassing, this bit! But here are a few of the lovely messages I've received following gigs, and things that people have said about me:

"Everyone's Favourite Music"

Thanks for the superb music you played for me and Pam and our guests back in May! There was a super mix of everyone's favourite music and party songs but your acoustic style made for an all-round stylish reception. The kids enjoyed you so much too. We loved our wedding day which you really contributed a lot to and married life is great. See you at a gig soon we hope! [Lenny & Pam, Clitheroe]

"Sublime"

Thank you so much for helping to make our special day even more special! Your version of Heaven for my entrance was sublime and so many people have commented on how unique the music was or that they didn't expect to hear John's 'unusual' taste in music used for our wedding but you made it possible! You were brilliant. [Julie (and John) Granger, Liverpool]

"Awesome!"

I work at That's Entertainment, I thought you guys were awesome! I shall let everyone know of your awesome voice. [Alfie, following a performance at Thats Entertainment Preston's birthday event]

"The Best Gift"

Just a quick email to say how fantastic you were when you played at my brother's wedding for us on 06.04.13. James and Angie were thrilled (they didn't know who we'd booked for their cocktails, just that you'd come highly recommended through Chris), and really loved the ambiance you created with your chill-out songs and you were the best gift we could possibly have given them. Thanks for being so accommodating and dropping everything mid-set when the sun came out to move out to the patio. The music was perfect for a sunny spring day. I'll highly recommend you, just like Chris did, to anyone looking for music to create a relaxing atmosphere for any occasion! Best wishes for the future. [Dan]

"Soulful"

As a session musician, it's great to find a singer who you enjoy working with and, more importantly, who you are inspired by. Kate Torevell's voice is unique and one of the most recogniseable and soulful of anyone that I've worked with during a fifteen year career as a professional musician. I love getting creative and I'm really proud of some of the acoustic cover versions we've created together; I love Acoustics by Kate gigs! [Craig Smith: Liverpool UK Session Musician]

"Voice of an Angel"

Kate has the voice of an angel! [Aileen Alberro, manageress of The Stag's Head, Goosnargh, Preston ]

"Amazing as Always!"

Thanks for entertaining us at Ken's 80th, you were amazing as always! [Rebecca Higham, Leyland]

Songs I Sing

Acoustic Covers Modern and Classic

I perform a range of acoustic covers of pop and soul songs, both modern and classic from the 60s onward. It's difficult to list them all so if there's something that you like but you don't see, just ask. It's possible that I do already sing it, or that it wouldn't take much time to learn. I've only listed one song per artist.

Unique Acoustic Cover Versions for Weddings

I like to play about with songs to create unique acoustic cover versions, usually stripped back or chilled out, with the help of my musicians. That creative part is my favourite part. I like to think that there's something for everyone in the list below, and every type of event is covered: wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, christenings, parties, functions, corporate events such as launch parties, background music for restaurants, and entertainment for pubs.

My Inspiration

I'm inspired by Jack Johnson and Ben Howard

I take my inspiration from all sorts of places. First up are my favourite singers to listen to: a long list! Of notable mention though are James Morrison, Ben Howard, Paulo Nutini, Jack Johnson, Sam Smith... artists like that. All men, you may notice. Male songs really lend themselves well to the rich bottom end of my voice; I love singing down there.

Radio 1 Live Lounge is an inspiration too

I keep an eye (or ear) on Radio 1's Live Lounge sessions, and festivals are a great place to pick up ideas. One of my all-time favourite songs to perform is Blondie's Heart of Glass, and Lily Allen's Glastonbury version has had a heavy influence on mine. Watching as much live acoustic music as possible reveals endless ways to deliver classic songs, and YouTube is fantastic for that these days, but remember folks: nothing beats live music!

Boyce Avenue, Jess Greenberg etc: YouTube Influences

I'm influenced by loads of cover artists on YouTube, including Boyce Avenue, Hannah Trigwell, Joseph Vincent, Rozzi Crane... and, ever so very slightly, Jess Greenberg.

Choosing Songs for Live Performance Set Lists

Professional Singer and Musicians

When it comes to choosing songs for your event, I always recommend that you leave the majority of the set list construction to me. With every gig, I've picked up more and more experience of what works and what doesn't work so well. Set lists chosen entirely by clients rarely have the same energy and audience response as those put together by an experienced professional singer and musicians (which is a shame because it'd save me hours that I could use to watch Netflix instead!).

However, if you'd like to make requests, please do! The best sets are those where the style and/or a certain number of songs are chosen by the client, and the rest is pieced together at my end around those choices. You get the style and songs that suit you, and I can create a set list that works as a performance around that.

Acoustics Wedding Songs

A quick look at my 'Songs I Sing' page will show you a range of songs that I sing, and most of them are suitable for chilled out wedding receptions and romantic wedding ceremonies.

For civil wedding ceremonies, all the songs you'll be asked to name by your registrar would be your choice. I'll adapt them to suit my vocal style and you'll have a unique version just for you. It's very rare that there's a song I can't adapt to an acoustic cover version along with my musicians. You'll be asked for the following:

  • Bridal entrance / aisle music
  • Two songs for the signing of the register
  • Exit music

You may also be asked for two named songs for immediately before the bridal entrance.

Wedding Packages

Beyond the above, the choice is yours: I'm available to perform while your guests await the bridal entrance after being seated in the ceremony room; I can play a set during your drinks reception immediately after the ceremony; relaxed stripped-back music is ideal as wedding breakfast entertainment or, of course, I can provide your evening reception acoustic entertainment, with or without a full function band.

Every wedding varies and should be personal to you, so it's no problem to include as little or as much of the above as you'd like. Obviously, there's no obligation to include the ceremony. Drop me a line, or a message, with your ideas, wants and needs, and we'll take it from there through to getting you a price.

Wedding Venues

I'm a UK wedding entertainer, and also available in parts of Europe, but most of the weddings I perform at are in the North West of England.

I'm available to sing accompanied at wedding venues with pianos like Eaves Hall, Mitton Hall, Mytton Fold, The Villa Wrea Green, The Clifton Hotel, Samlesbury Hall, Langdale Chase, Broadoaks Country House, Bolton School and so on. It's a great way to use their piano more creatively than simply booking a pianist!

"My venue hasn't got a piano!" Don't worry! My accompanist provides electric piano options - which are also great space saving options compared to a baby grand - and regularly does so at wedding venues such as Haighton Manor, Beeston Manor, Singleton Lodge, Leyland Hotel, Meols Hall, Carden Park Hotel, Peckforton Castle, Ashton Memorial, Preston Guild Hall etc. We also have an agreement with a local hire company who will provide us with grand pianos for roughly £300 a day.

I'll be in the studio next week working on versions of a few new songs, and hopefully getting some demos of them recorded for the website.

Have you heard my existing demos? They're on Soundcloud; the link is at the top of the page, or just click the 'My Samples' link.

The 'Songs I Sing' page has a list of some of the songs I currently perform.

I like to relax before I head off somewhere for a night working, and one way is by going walking.

Since I'm working in Liverpool tonight (and because I was naughty and had a fry-up for breakfast), I decided to do just that! I somehow ended up in one of my favourite pubs, The Smith's Arms near Preston, eating fish and chips... and chocolate fudge cake. Slightly naughtier still!

I promise this won't become some sort of weird habit, but here are some more grumpy sheep:

01.09.15

So today, I climbed a waterfall! Like, rock climbed it. With no ropes!

Went to Malham in the Yorkshire Dales for an 8 mile hike up Goredale Scar, across the moors to Malham Tarn, then back towards Malham Cove (getting lost en route). It was lovely. Finished off with a bowl of the biggest and best onion rings I've ever seen in a pub in the village. I'd post a pic of those using my head as a size reference, but I had no makeup by this point and my hair was... interesting.

So here's a grumpy sheep instead:

Looking forward to playing Tia's wedding, for which I've just been booked. It's all the way down in Warwickshire at the fab looking Bosworth Hall Hotel. I'll be playing the earlier part of evening reception with the fella accompanying me. We'll have the honour of playing the first dance too- I love that part!

Welcome to my new website!

There's loads to see, so have a gander!
